InnovaWorks — Case Study

Password Generator

Simple on the surface — a slider and one button — with the organisation's password policy, per-account presets and safe clipboard handling doing the work behind it.

01The Brief

What the customer needed

Staff were choosing their own passwords, with predictable results: some too weak, and some so awkward to type that the same one ended up in use across several systems. There was no quick, standard way to produce something that satisfied the IT password policy and was still usable day to day.

02The Approach

How we designed it

The brief was to make the right thing the easy thing, which meant putting almost nothing on screen: generate, check the strength, copy, done. Everything that makes it trustworthy sits behind that — the rules come from the organisation's real password policy rather than being hard-coded, each kind of account gets its own preset, and nothing generated outlives the session. Simple to use was the requirement; simple underneath was never the point.

03What We Built

Feature breakdown

Presets for each kind of account — staff logins, admin accounts, Wi-Fi keys and passphrases — so the right rules are one tap away

Generation driven by the organisation's own password policy, with every requirement checked and shown as it is met

Length and character types adjustable on the spot, including excluding ambiguous characters so a key can safely be read aloud over the phone

One-tap copy and regenerate, with the clipboard clearing itself shortly afterwards

Generated values held in memory for the session only — never stored or sent, with the audit trail recording that a password was issued rather than what it was

The same interface on a desktop at a workstation and on a phone out on site

04The Outcome

The impact it had

Strong passwords became the path of least resistance rather than a chore to work around. Because the policy now lives in the tool rather than in a document nobody reads, what staff produce is compliant by default instead of by good intentions.
